a couple's adventures in eating
What: The Meat House (One Year Birthday Bash!)
Where: 669 North Orange Avenue Winter Park, FL 32789
The Deal: What better way to spend a sunny Saturday afternoon than sampling delicious, mostly local foods from your friendly neighborhood butcher? As Timothy had to work (fie on you, the man!), I traveled solo to represent the taller portion of this here blog. I watched the Meat House grow from the bottom up as it was being built right next to the theatre where I find most of my employment. It shines like a golden beacon on the corner of Orange Avenue daring you to just try and resist its wares.
The 1 Year Birthday Bash was a joy to attend with its delicious assortment of local vendors sampling their specialties. But, fear not if you missed the shindig. The Meat House ALWAYS has samples for its customers. I enjoy walking in every now and again just to grab a quick taste of their fine olive oils and sweet balsamic vinegars. You’re not going to find everything you need at The Meat House but, it’s a great place to head to for an incredible sub or impressive gourmet goodies to show off at your next party. Aside from the Grade A fresh cuts of every kind of meat you could ever want, The Meat House offers beautiful local veggies, a lofty collection of beers and wines, assorted dips, spreads, spices, and a glorious olive bar that also includes in-house grape leaves, and fava beans swimming in olive oil. Don’t expect to save a lot of money here. Think a Dean and Deluca type of price range (hence my affinity for sampling while visiting this charming place).
I was thrilled to meet all of the local vendors if for no other reason than to put a face to all of the food I’ve tasted and purchased. Favorite samples included Mitchell’s Fresh Chile Con Queso, Serendipity Sweets‘ snickerdoodle cupcake, and to top the list, Shirley’s Swamp Salsa of John and Shirley’s Catering. Shirley, the larger than life twangy blonde in the back of the store made my day with not only her raucous sense of humor, but also her incredible salsa (it has BLACK EYED PEAS in it, a Southern girls dream come true!). I made an immediate purchase and paired it up with some Way Better Sweet Potato Tortilla Chips (not sold at The Meat House) upon my arrival home. All in a day’s work.
Happy Birthday, Meat House. Thank you for consistently making my taste buds smile and keeping local businesses alive.
